TheBrothersWISP 7 – Airfiber – Latvian Mikrotik Videos – Mikrotik Basics

Andrew was out sick for this one so it was just JJ, Justin and Greg. We tried out google huddle this go around and I have to say it was a success 🙂

We talked about:
JJ read the airfiber manual…why would any self respecting man read a manual?
We talk briefly about the Latvian TV interview with the Mikrotik CTO.
The new Mikrotik 951 marketing video.
We spoke about the firewall script I put up.
We spoke breifly about OSPF NBMA.
Here’s my rubber-band gun 😉

Here’s the video:(if you don’t see it, hit refresh)

  1. Great episode guys, some good information in there.

    keep up the great work.

    cheers

  2. As usual, enjoyed the webcast. As you mentioned, we noobs are soaking this stuff up. I’m 20+ year veteran in software engineering, now an ‘architect’ they call me now, but always had a love for networking and I’ve been moonlighting to get my WISP set up and now my living room looks like a UBNT junk yard. Your combined experience here is tremendous!

Greg – thanks for the tip on the big food in Houston. Had a great stay, though I flew from Austin to Houston, so I missed that tip on the drive. I’ll be back in Houston in a few weeks – I liked “the tasting room” in the Galleria.

Feedback – For WISPS – should I allocate a huge block of public IPs and share them? Or should I NAT everyone (or put them into a private IP bank)? Where is a good reference on how to engineer antenna mounts? I’m about to do my first big tower install and I’m heading into a tower farm with 7 towers, which includes 3 x 100kw FM stations. Yikes. They charge me by attachment point, so I want to make the best of it, and also not get fried by the 300kw+ of RF shrapnel. Other feedback – what are your thoughts on the 3.65 band as the $250 license seems to be a nice way to get a step ahead of the crowd. Also, how about some stories about interference – how to be a good neighbor and all of that. I’d like to hear more on this 6GHz stuff too…

    You guys rock!

  3. @Edward

Glad to hear you had a good time sir!

Thanks for the plethora of feedback. JJ and Justin are really the tower gurus. I’m hoping these guys can put some information together…perhaps if we ask enough they will get motivated…hehe.

  4. Great show! I look forward to each new episode. I’m relatively new to MikroTik and we have had good success so far.

I work for an Oil and Gas company and I am responsible for all field communications. We’ve just started rolling out MikroTik and getting to hear from folks with experience is great.

    P.S.
I think the Google Hangout worked well!

  5. @Wayne

Excellent sir! I suppose you are back-hauling SCADA information?

I’m glad the hangout was successful because it is SO much easier.

  6. Found the podcast a few weeks ago and just got caught up yesterday. Awesome information!

Keep up the great work and don’t forget about us that just listen on the audio-only podcast. When you have things on screen, be sure to describe them as well. 🙂

  7. @Chris
Thank you sir. I’ll keep that in mind…I was actually thinking of that the other day…heh.

  8. Many thanks for the rubber band gun, well done I have never seen before a so cool
self made thing. Plain easy to use to hunt the cat 😉
